General strike enters second day



A second day of a 48-hour general strike called by Greek umbrella unions GSEE and ADEDY was set to cause further disruption in public transport and other services on Wednesday.


The two main labor unions were also organizing a rally on the day at 5 p.m. on Syntagma Square, in central Athens, while another demonstration, organized by Communist Party-affiliated union PAME, was scheduled to take off from Omonia Square.
On Wednesday, the Athens metro and the Piraeus-Kifissia electric railway (ISAP) were expected to resume services starting at 3 p.m. while Greek police had ordered the Syntagma, Panepistimio, Evangelismos and Acropolis metro stations to be remain closed throughout the day. Metro services were not running beyond the Doukissis Plakentias station due to OSE railway staff strike action. Meanwhile, the tram was expected to resume partial service by noon and full service by 1 p.m.
Suburban railway services (Proastiakos), buses and trolleys were not operating on Wednesday, while taxis were on a third day of rolling strike activity. Ferries remained docked at ports across the country, while state hospitals were operating on skeleton staff on Wednesday. Pharmacies remained closed.
Continuing their industrial action on Wednesday were engineers, lawyers, prosecutors, while bank employees, municipal staff, teachers, professors and Hellenic Post staff members were also on strike.
Journalists were expected to participate in a three-hour walkout from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., while air traffic controllers were participating in a four-hour stoppage from noon to 4 p.m.
